US resumes its Efforts to Send Haitians Home”  Summarized by Matthew Reid

Main Point: with the Cuban refugee problem under control and the Iranian Crisis no longer an issue, the INS is now able to focus on the deporting of immigrants and other illegal immigrants.

Summary: The government has begun to focus on deporting Haitians as Cuban refugees and the Iranian crisis are now under control.!   The crackdown began last week and is expected to deport up to 4000 Haitians.  Haitians aren’t the only group targeted in this revived effort of the INS to remove illegal immigrants; all illegal aliens are now being searched out.  The apprehension of non-Cuban and non-Iranian refugees is expected to increase by as much as 20%.

This renewed attention toward Haitians  came in mid-January when the Department of Justice overturned a two-year old court order that prohibited the deporting of Haitians.  Haitians who arrived before October 10, 1980 will be allowed to stay and to attempt to become permanent US residents.

Out of all the possible Haitian deportees, however, many are expected to claim political asylum.  Defenders of the Haitians in the US say that the new policy will not only harm Haitians but their communities as well.
