Grade 8


     Both of the rereading tasks below are based on the initial pages of Scene 5, Beckmann's conversation with Frau Kramer.  Both tasks are intended as follow-up after pre-reading and initial reading phases.

     Identify the Standard applied and discuss the appropriateness of the tasks that follow for a student at the Grade 8 level with at between one and two years of German. After you read both exercises, go to the Brainstorming Forum below, or, if you do not wish to brainstorm, go directly to the Hints on the exercises.


Exercise A:
Grade 8

     Students are told to read the scene for two or three question and answer series and imitate the ways in which one of the figures responds to the other.  For example, if the figure chosen is Frau Kramer, the student might commence as follows:

die Frage

Was ich dazu tue oder sage

Ein Mann fragt, "wo ist unser Messingschild geblieben"

ich frage, "was für 'unser Schild.'"

Er fragt, "wo sind meine Eltern?"

ich sage, "ich weiß nicht"


Exercise B:
Grade 8

     Students are told to read the scene and pretend they have overheard a real conversation and want to relate it to a friend.  To do so, they are to pick out two or three exchanges in order to relate the gist of the conversation.

Was Beckmann sagt

Was Frau Kramer sagt

Ein Mann fragt, wo eine Eltern sind

Frau K. antwortet [zuerst] nicht. Sie fragt, wer er denn ist.

Der Mann antwortet, daß er Beckmann heißt und hier ist seine Wohnung.

Frau K. sagt, die Wohnung gehört ihnen / daß die Wohnung ihnen gehört.


BRAINSTORMING
