Exercise B:

Concept Building with "ein / kein"

The teacher wants to prepare students to talk about the "have" and "have not" dichotomy in Draußen vor der Tür by introducing negation with "kein," and then building on the difference to make students thing about what it means to belong to a group.

With reference to objects or people in the classroom, this teacher also introduces nouns from Draußen vor der Tür that are used with the verb "tragen," e.g., "Brille," "Uniform," "Maske," "lange / kurze Haare."  Students decide whether someone "trägt eine / keine Brille."  Typical sentences they see or hear would be:

STAGE ONE: wahr oder nicht wahr?

     1) Jimmie trägt eine Brille.

     2) Karen trägt eine Maske.

After that, students decide who belongs together, sorting each other or people in pictures by characteristics in that wordlist.

STAGE TWO: zusammen oder nicht zusammen?

     ANSWERS: [eine / keine Sätze]

Annie trägt eine Brille; Johann trägt keine Brille.
