Going the Distance: Reading

Course Syllabus

The syllabus below outlines a timetable for the semester, including the due date for credit assignments. For each unit, you will submit your comments to Brainstorming assignments by the date indicated, and you will receive the comments of other course participants.

As you work through the website, you will also have a written assignment due for each course unit, due on the date indicated. The assignments work parallel to the website, guiding you to work up a curricular unit on foreign-language reading to use in your own instructional context and teaching situation(s). That unit may also be written up as a demonstration unit for in-service presentations, for conventions, or for school boards looking to implement the Standards for Foreign-Language Learning into their curricula and classrooms.

To make sure that the developmental arc that the Standards are based on are upheld, the assignments for the 8 units should all be completed with reference to the same longer reading text or cluster of shorter reading texts. Unit 1 will start you off by asking you to chose a text; by the time you work through the successive units, you will have the chance to develop a coherent sequence of exercises leading your students from comprehension to production at any given learning level -- or even between levels within a coherent curriculum.
